About London region

Greater London is made up of 32 boroughs and the City of London, and covers an area of 1,572 sq km.  Geographically it is the smallest of the English regions but in population terms one of the largest.  It has 7.43 million inhabitants, representing almost 15% of the population of England.

London is seen as the most ethnically diverse city in the world with 40% of its population coming from ethnic groups, over 300 languages spoken and some 14 different religions practised.

Areas of wealth lie alongside areas of deprivation and it’s not surprising that three of the five most deprived English boroughs are in London. In the last financial year, BIG awarded 1,697 grants in London to the value of £37,442,320.

The London regional team consists of a Head of Region, two Regional Policy and Partnership managers, two Regional Policy and Partnership officers, a Regional Communications Manager, a Regional Communications officer and an Administrative Assistant.

As a team, we are very effective in communicating messages and understanding regional issues in London by tapping into local networks and partnerships. We hold regular meetings with funding advisers, key voluntary sector organisations, and regional and local government. We also work with statutory agencies like helper agencies, regional lottery forums and other funders.

An important part of the regional team’s work, and a key part of BIG’s Intelligent Funder approach, is to provide regional intelligence to our grants staff and committee members.  This work includes

  • Providing a general, local, regional and sub-regional geographic context,
  • Programme-specific context,
  • Portfolio commentary,
  • ‘Informal’ data and intelligence,
  • Customer feedback,
  • Analysis of funding data to help us focus our outreach work.
