Social Enterprise Day

The Big Lottery Fund is a huge supporter of the UK Social Enterprise sector

A social enterprise is a business with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners.

The coming years are going to be an exciting time for BIG, and consequently the Social Enterprise sector too. BIG are now at the start of a new funding period. We recently published our Strategic Framework to 2015.

BIG considers Social Enterprises to be part of the wider Voluntary and Community sector, who are our major partner in delivery. In our new Strategic Framework we have set ourselves a target that sector will receive at least 80 per cent of our funding between now and 2015. This is something we consider a positive step for Social Enterprises and the wider Voluntary and Community sector.

BIG has in the past supported Social Enterprises across the UK to the tune of hundreds of millions of pounds, funding a range of social enterprises from out of school hours childcare clubs to community transport initiatives.

First Step Trust is a Social Enterprise supported by BIG which gives work experience to people with mental health problems and other disadvantages.
