Launched on 1 June 2004, the Big Lottery Fund is the joint operating name of the New Opportunities Fund (NOF) and the National Lottery Charities Board which made grants under the name of the Community Fund (CF).
Our new organisation brings together the work of these two National Lottery distributors, as well as taking on the Millennium Commission’s role in supporting large-scale regeneration projects and, eventually, its residuary responsibilities. We are now responsible for distributing half of all the funding the Lottery raises for good causes (over £600 million a year between 2005-2010).
The three UK-wide themes which underpin all our programmes are:
Supporting community learning and creating opportunity
Promoting community cohesion and safety, and
Promoting well-being
These three themes are supported by four outcomes specific to Northern Ireland, which set out what we hope our funding will achieve:
People have the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
People can actively participate in their communities to bring about positive change.
Community ownership of better and safer rural and urban environments.
Improved physical and mental health for all people.
