1. Who can apply for a 2014 Communities grant?

We will only offer grants to voluntary and community sector organisations, community councils and schools.  We will not fund individuals and sole traders, local authorities, health bodies, profit-making organisations and governing bodies of sport. If you are a branch of a larger organisation you may be eligible to apply, please see the guidance or call our advice line: 0870 240 2391.

2. How much money can we get?

You can apply for a grant of between £300 and £2000.  BIG will also partly fund costs of a larger project, however, the total project costs must not exceed £2,000, and BIG’s contribution must be a maximum of £2,000. You must be able to complete the project and spend the entire grant within a maximum of twelve months of receiving the grant payment.

3. What geographical area does 2014 Communities cover?

Scotland, however organisations from across the UK can apply for funding as long as the beneficiaries are based in Scotland.

4. Who will benefit? What are the aims of the programme?

As we want to see more people taking part and more volunteers in sport and physical activity from low participation groups such as women & girls, people who are disabled, people over 50 years of age, people under 25 years of age and people from black and minority ethnic communities, we are more likely to fund projects that meet one of these priorities.  Our priorities may change in the future and will be updated here.

We anticipate the most popular volunteering activity to be coaching; however volunteering can take a number of forms dependent on skills and interests. There may be opportunities to coach, help with the admin, assist participants taking part in the project or activities, drive transportation, take photographs, organise events, fundraise or get involved in the committee of a local club.  For more information contact our advice line 0870 240 2391.

5. Who do I contact for more information?

You can find out more about 2014 Communities and the work of the Big Lottery fund in Scotland by calling 0870 240 2391 or email enquiries.scotland@biglotteryfund.org.uk.

If you have a hearing impairment you can contact us using a textphone on 0141 242 1500.

6. What if we have applied before to 2014 Communities and been rejected or had a conditional offer withdrawn?

If you have previously been rejected for a project or if you received a conditional offer of grant which was later withdrawn, you can reapply but you must address the reasons why we had to reject or withdraw our offer.  You do not need to wait 12 months before sending us a new application for the same project. We consider each application on its merits and against other applications we receive at that time, so there is no guarantee that we will make a conditional offer to you.

7. We did not receive a grant due to ‘insufficient funds’ can we apply again within 12 months for the same project?

We expect a high demand for funding under 2014 Communities and we may receive more fundable applications than we can support.  If your project was rejected due to insufficient funds, you may apply again for the same project within the same 12-month period.  However there is no guarantee that your project will be funded; if there are more applications that are considered to better meet the programme’s aims and outcomes, your project may be rejected again.

8 . What activities are you looking to support through 2014 Communities?

The guidance provides examples of sports and physical activities we will consider supporting.  Projects that involve sports and physical activities not on this list should contact the advice line 0870 240 2391 before they apply.  We welcome applications from projects supporting disability sports or physical activities. We can fund existing activities and projects as long as the grant will result in more people participating or volunteering in sport or physical activity.

9. If our project is aimed at working with children, young people or vulnerable adults do we need any special documentation?

Projects applying to work with children, young people or vulnerable adults are responsible for having acceptable policies and procedures in place, to ensure that they are safe and that the project is effectively managed.  We may ask to look at these policies and procedures at any time.

10. What if I don’t have a constitution?

In order for groups to apply for 2014 Communities funding, you must have a constitution or set of rules which has been signed and adopted by your group.

A constitution is a written document that sets out how an organisation or group works. It may be known as a number of different things, such as a set of rules, terms of reference or something similar. It must cover certain things like the name of the group, the objects (which can be called aims, objectives or purposes) and membership. Please contact the advice line 0870 240 2391 for more information
