Summary of the programme
The Breathing Places programme is a UK wide small grants programme developed in partnership with the BBC. It complements the BBC’s Breathing Places campaign by giving funding for small groups. In phase One, Two and Three of the programme £8.5 million was distributed for projects that improved the local environment or created new breathing places
To tie in with the BBC’s Springwatch Open Weekend in early June 2009 we are now offering existing Breathing Places grant holders the opportunity to apply for a further small grant for their breathing place. Up to £1 million is available across the UK for this final phase of the programme.
Are you eligible?
Only projects that received a grant through Phase One, Two or Three of the Breathing Places programme can apply to Phase Four. Grants of between £1,000 and £5,000 are available to run events and activities that celebrate the success of the breathing places we have funded, and increase the number of people making use of and helping to develop and maintain them.
Through Phase Four we want to fund events and activities that promote skills and resources that will encourage long-term activity and participation on the site. This could include running an inspirational event that brings people closer to nature, such as a community fun day or volunteer planting session, recruiting new volunteers, producing publicity materials or educational guides, or providing conservation taster sessions or training in specialist skills.
We hope some of the projects we fund will be in a position to run their events and activities to coincide with the BBC’s Springwatch Open Weekend in early June 2009.
What to do next
Existing Breathing Places grant holders were asked to register their interest in applying for a further small grant by the end of December 2008. Application materials will be sent out in early January 2009 to those who registered their interest.
The deadline for receipt of completed applications is noon on Friday 6 February 2009.
