Living Landmarks was launched in June 2005 to fund major projects that will have a real impact on communities. Across the UK, woodlands, waterways, cycle bridges, parks, buildings, open public spaces - projects that enhance the natural and built environments - are set to benefit.

The £140 million programme will support large-scale capital projects through two distinct funding streams. All the projects have gone through a competitive and rigorous assessment process to get this far.

Three schemes in Cornwall, Scotland and Northern Ireland are celebrating their share in a multi-million pound investment by the Big Lottery Fund to become Living Landmarks.

The three successful projects have in total been awarded just over £70 million by the Fund.

Kerrier District Council’s Cornwall’s Heartlands has been awarded £22.3million; The Greater East Belfast Partnership’s Connswater Community Greenway has been awarded £23.5million, and Falkirk Council’s The Helix has been awarded £25million.

Sir Clive Booth, Chair of the Big Lottery Fund, said: “We are tremendously excited about the Living Landmarks programme, which is now approaching its final stages. Through this programme we will fund some truly ground-breaking projects that capture the imagination of communities, making them better places to live, work and play. A lot of hard work has gone into putting these applications together and each project will be carefully assessed on its own merit, before a panel of experts gets together to make what are bound to be some tough funding decisions.”

Living Landmarks: The People’s Millions

In addition, BIG will make a single award of between £25 million and £50 million with the public deciding the eventual winner in a televised vote on ITV.

A programme committee will make decisions on which projects should go forward to the public vote in October with the eventual winner decided in December.
