Lady 1
The Big Lottery Fund’s vision is to help the communities and people the most in need so we try and direct all our funding into areas where people in a sense need lottery money most. And we fund what people want to do, what they feel will give them a greater sense of well being and a feeling of belonging in their communities

The money from the Big Lottery Fund has enabled us to run an extensive range of programmes for our young people, and the mandatory ones would be things like they would do drug and alcohol awareness courses, sexuality courses, computer courses, capacity building courses, and also the fun side like the cookery classes, like the pool competitions, like the drama.
Lady 3
Well there’s been a lot of personal development, you know, within the project as well, you know, getting to know new people and being able to open up and talk to people you’ve never met before, like I wouldn’t have really done that before, I used to be kind of a bit shy and withdrawn, you wouldn’t think now but I’m certainly more, you know, confident.
Man 1
The exciting bit for me is knowing that young people are coming through who are going to have the interest, not only of this club, but this community at heart, and they’re going to look after and develop that interest and secure the future of both their families, this club and our community for the long term foreseeable future.

My one friend introduced me, to the Bharatiya Ashram is open here, and I’m going inside, and I see people who belong to my country, they speak same language and I ask about everything, somebody come and talk about home help, about benefit pension, if you need help you phone this number and this number like this. And also there’s video, television, computer, they are provided.
Lady 5
You don’t really hear about loads of these facilities anyway here in Dundee, and a lot of people pay for their tutorial sessions whereas this ones for the community, so it’s for everybody, you can just come along and join whenever you want.
Man 2
I think it has a very big impact, and people are struggling, I think it’s really useful, you know, people who are scared maybe at school, asking teachers to come here, so it’s one on one, it’s really friendly and it does help, honestly.
Lady 6
It means a lot because on the prelims I got a really bad mark and I pulled it up with the help of coming here.
Lady 7
My involvement with the project was that I was involved with the hearts and minds that was trying to promote healthy hearts for people with learning disabilities and mental health problems.
Man 3
The project was originally funded to have about 800 people within the first year, it’s actually had over 4000 people use the facility, mainly because there’s nothing like this within North Wales.
Man 4
I actually had a heart attack just over a year ago and on discharge from the hospital I was told about the rehabilitation unit that operates here, the programmes there involve a certain amount of physical activity to get you back into physical shape, and also restore your confidence.
Man 5
It’s really helped a big cross section of people, and people who wouldn’t normally get a chance to ride bicycles. I think the health benefit is excellent and also the ability for people to come and socialise.
Man 4
As far as I’m concerned this pedal power project has an absolutely immense value to me, and not just me, there’s a large number of people that have been through this, many of them have actually got fit again and gone back to work.
Lady 8
This was a derelict land belonging to the education department, and people were using it as a walk through, you name it, they were dumping it here.
Man 6
The hard work started then because we had to find funding, to redevelop the site, so when that funding comes in it was a god send, it was, well it was our answer to a lot of the prayers.
Lady 9
You see some children, who have just completely changed, and they’ve got a focus, we’ve got children who live for gardening club, who live to come over and find out what’s happening.
Child
I’ve actually learnt not to hurt plants because they’re living things, and you should respect them because they are gorgeous and nice and they keep you alive, so they’re really helping you.
Lady 10
And getting money from the Big Lottery Fund was really good for us, for the next 5 years, we can now build our building blocks to become self sufficient and as the money we’ve asked for tails off, we’re going to make our money and pay our own way. Which is what we’ll do.
Lady 11
Having funding, from the Big Lottery Fund, is fantastic, because it really means you can develop the project.
Man 7
They have allowed us to grow, and I think that’s vital because you’re constantly wishing to expand.
Man 8
It’s given us the security to look further then one year ahead, which is where we were for many years.
Man 9
Without the Big Lottery Fund we wouldn’t have much. Definitely wouldn’t have much.
