About Yorkshire and the Humber

Yorkshire and the Humber is a large and diverse region. It stretches across 15,413 square miles taking in a wide variety of landscapes, history and people. From industrial South Yorkshire with its history of coal mining and steel production, across to the Humber with its ports and maritime history. It encompasses large rural areas including the Yorkshire Dales, the Pennines and the East Yorkshire Wolds. It is also home to seaside towns and five major cities: Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, York and Hull.

The region is made up of 21 local authority areas and four sub regions: West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and The Humber. It is home to 5.1 million people, 10 per cent of England’s population.

Yorkshire and the Humber has benefited from regeneration and economic growth over recent years, but parts of the region have seen socio-economic decline with pockets of deprivation found across the region.

Key functions of the regional office are:

  • policy development
  • public involvement and communications
  • networking, partnership, outreach and development.

We hold regular meetings with funding advisers, key voluntary sector organisations, regional and local government, and other funders to communicate messages about our funding. We identify areas where we are receiving fewer applications and ensure we are attending funding events in these areas and working with helper agencies.
