The Board is responsible for the overall policy, finance, grant-making and administration of Big Lottery Fund.
Professor Sir Clive Booth: Board Chair

“Building on the tremendous achievements of our predecessors, my ambition is that the new board will strive to make a reality of our vision of bringing real improvements to communities and people most in need.”
Sir Clive Booth took a science degree with first class honours from the University of Cambridge and a doctorate in public finance from the University of California, Berkeley. He was a senior civil servant in the Department for Education until 1981 and Principal Private Secretary to the Secretary of State (1975-77).
He became successively Deputy Director of Plymouth Polytechnic (1981-84), associate HM Inspector of Schools (1984-86), Director of Oxford Polytechnic (1986-92) and Vice-Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University (1992-97). He chaired the Teacher Training Agency (1997-2003), Nurses Pay Review Body (1997-2004) and was deputy chair of the South East England Development Agency (1998-2004). He has been a senior education adviser to the World Bank and British Council. He was knighted in 2003 for services to higher education.
He is currently UK Chair of the Big Lottery Fund and Chair of Centrex, the national police training body. He is also working with the National Offender Management Service on reducing re-offending and conducting a review for the Home Office on police pay. He is an editorial board member of the Oxford Review of Education.
He struggles with an allotment, frequently loses at bridge and takes consolation in opera.
Anna Southall: Vice Chair

“BIG has already demonstrated its ability to support people and communities in meeting needs that they identify by funding projects that they devised and can deliver. I am delighted to join the new UK board to work with the four country committees to ensure that BIG continues to respond intelligently to national, regional and local needs.”
Anna Southall is a trustee of the Barrow Cadbury Trust and Fund, a charitable foundation which promotes social justice, which she chaired from 1996 to 2006. She is ‘Lead Trustee’ for the Trust’s young Adults and Criminal Justice programme. She was previously Chief Executive at Resource: The Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries, and before that Director of the National Museums and Galleries of Wales (1998-2002). She is a member of the Advisory Panel on Futurebuilders, and of the Executive Committee of the Association of Charitable Foundations. She also serves on the Spoliation Advisory Panel.
Sanjay Dighe: England Chair

"I am honoured to be with BIG at this exciting time. We have many challenges and opportunities ahead of us and I relish the chance to address them as part of the excellent team we have at BIG."
Sanjay Dighe is currently Principal of Vega Risk Consulting providing training and consultancy in financial derivatives and risk management. He has previously held senior executive positions in investment banks including Global Head of Equity Derivatives at Banque Paribas Capital Markets.
Other experience includes: Councillor and Deputy Leader Harrow Council (Labour); Lead Member for Equalities, London Councils; Non-Executive Director and Chair of Audit Committee, Central and North West London Mental Health Trust.
Sanjay is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is a member of the Strategic Planning Society and founder member of the London chapter of the Global Association of Risk Professionals. He is a Governor of two schools and a Further Education college. He holds M.B.A and B.Sc. (Hons) degrees.
Breidge Gadd CBE: Northern Ireland Chair

“I am delighted to be appointed to the new board and I am excited about the implementation of new Northern Ireland programmes just launched and contributing to the development of a fully operational Northern Ireland committee.”
Breidge Gadd has been a member of the New Opportunities Fund since May 2001 and was previously Chair of its Northern Ireland Committee. Breidge retired from the Probation Board for Northern Ireland in May 2000 after 14 years as its Chief probation Officer. During her full time career she was an expert advisor on criminal justice practice to the Council of Europe, a founding member of the European Conference on Probation and visiting professor to the University of Ulster. Breidge is currently Deputy Chair of the recently established Northern Ireland Legal Services Commission. She is involved with the Edward de Bono Foundation in its work to establish an international centre for constructive thinking in North Belfast and she is a weekly columnist on a local daily newspaper. She has several voluntary commitments including being a Governor of Hazelwood Integrated School.
Alison Magee: Scotland Chair

“I am delighted to have been appointed as the Scotland Chair of BIG and I strongly support BIG’s aims of strengthening and regenerating our communities by being an intelligent funder. I also welcome BIG’s commitment to working in partnerships and I am greatly looking forward to contributing to its success.”
Alison Magee was the Convener of Highland Council for the four years to May 2007. She has had nearly 20 years' experience in Scottish local government as an independent councillor, including four years as Convener of Sutherland District Council. She has been Chair of Highland 2007 (the year Scotland celebrates Highland culture), Chair of Inverness City Partnership, and a member of Highland Health Board. She has also been a Board Member of Caithness and Sutherland Enterprise, and previously ran a small business. She lives in central Sutherland.
Huw Vaughan Thomas: Wales Chair

“These are exciting times for BIG in Wales, which will now also include the responsibilities of the Millennium Commission. We are investing a million pounds a week in projects and infrastructures that have a significant impact on the lives of people and communities throughout Wales. We look forward to working with organisations throughout Wales to ensure this is money well spent.”
Huw Vaughan Thomas has been Director of Taro Consultancy Ltd, a North Wales based company specialising in organisational, governance and economic policy work in the public sector, since June 2001. He is currently a consumer representative on the Hearing Aid Council and an independent member of the Parole Board. He recently served as a Member of the Commission on Powers and Electoral Arrangements of the National Assembly for Wales. His earlier career was spent in the civil service and local government. He was formerly Chief Executive of Denbighshire County Council, Chief Executive of Gwynedd County Council, and Director for Wales for the Manpower Services Commission and Department of Employment. In his previous voluntary and public appointments he has been, amongst other things, a member of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales, a Council Member of the Prince’s Trust, Cymru, member of the National Trust’s Committee for Wales, a trustee of the RNID and a lay member of the Law Society’s Governing Council.
Judith Donovan CBE: General member

A Yorkshire businesswoman who founded her own direct marketing company in 1982, was Chairman of Bradford TEC from 1989-97, the first female President of Bradford Chamber of Commerce from 1992-2001 and was Chairman of the Yorkshire Tourist Board 2005-08. She has been Health and Safety Commissioner since 2000, is a director of the Northern Ballet Theatre, member of the Programme Monitoring Committee for Objective 2 Funding for Yorkshire and Humber and Chairman of Postwatch for the North of England. She was also a Millennium Commissioner, appointed January 2000.
Roland Doven MBE: General member

“I am proud and excited to continue to serve BIG as it delivers grant-making that targets disadvantage through promoting accessibility, participation, equality of opportunity, social inclusion and cultural diversity.”
Roland Doven is consultant to grant-makers and clients have included The Camelot Foundation, the Home Office, GlaxoSmithKline and Hammersmith and Fulham New Deal for Communities. He has chaired the Stonewall C21 Grants Committee (2000-2003) and was Director of Programmes at the Association of Charitable Foundations (1993-2000). He has been a Justice of the Peace for the Inner London Petty Sessional Division since 1990 and for nine years was an Independent Member of the Parole Board (1997-2006). His previous appointments and employment include: Co-founder and Vice-President of the National Association of Bereavement Services (1988-2002); Trustee of Addaction (2003-2005); Councillor, London Borough of Lambeth (1998-2002); Non-Executive Director of Lambeth Primary Care Trust (2002-2003); and Lay Member of the General Medical Council (1999-2003). He was awarded the MBE in 2004 for services to the community.
John Gartside OBE: General member

“Having worked with groups of people who face considerable stigma and lack of employment opportunities because they have a mental illness or learning disability, I am particularly keen to focus on helping these communities as this new board continues BIG’s mission to improve the lives of people in greatest need.”
John Gartside is currently Chairman of the Warrington Primary care Trust. He is also a Trustee of the Jonathan Ball Tim Parry trust, a charity in Warrington focussing on young people, and Deputy Lieutenant of Cheshire. He is a Member of the Cheshire Courts Board, a Member of the Bar Society Standards Board Monitoring Committee and a Freeman of Warrington. He was Chair of the NHS Warrington Community Health Care Trust (1995-2002) and also served for 10 years as leader of the Warrington Local Unitary Authority (1992-2002). He was, until October 2006, Chairman of the 5 Boroughs Partnership, a specialist mental health and learning difficulties trust that he founded in 2002, serving over one million people in the North West. He has been Chairman of the Cheshire Local Government Association (2000-2002) and was a founding member of the North West Regional Assembly before resigning in 2002.
Esther O'Callaghan: General member (resigned 18 May 2008)

Esther O’Callaghan established the Factory Record Store in Manchester in 2002, becoming the North West finalist for Shell Live Wires’ ‘Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2003’. Using profits from the business she set up the Factory Foundation, the UK’s first AQA accredited organisation, delivering free music workshops for disaffected children and young people across Greater Manchester.
Esther DJs across Europe and is an award-winning producer with the Manchester International Festival. She is a Vice-President for the Community Foundation for Greater Manchester, a volunteer business mentor for the Prince’s Trust, sits on the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Steering Committee, was named the 2005 Clarins ‘Most Dynamic Woman of the Year’, and is a Governor for the Olympics Legacy UK.
Albert Tucker: General member

I am very pleased and excited to be part of BIG and I look forward to contributing to its work in international grants, supporting social enterprises and as a major funder of the voluntary sector, which can have such a huge impact on people’s lives.
Albert Tucker is a leading figure in the fairtrade movement and overseas development and is an advocate for poor small farmers in global trade and policy. He has a longstanding track record with leading charitable funders financing UK and international development.
Albert has had senior management and non-executive roles in regeneration, community development and social enterprise. He was Chief Executive of Twin and Twin Trading for nine years. He has been the Chair of Comic Relief’s International Grants Committee and associated with Comic Relief for over 16 years, funding innovative programmes with poor communities in the UK, Africa, Asia and Latin America. He is trustee and grants panel member of the City Parochial Foundation; a non-Executive Director of The Places for People Group, one of the largest and leading Registered Social Landlords in the UK; and also Chair of the Assurance and Regulation Board. He currently works as an independent consultant and recently worked with the BBC, contributing to their Africa Lives season.
Diana Whitworth: General member

"I am looking forward building on all the work that created such an extraordinary range of programmes embracing communities, learning, the environment and well-being. I am convinced that our strong emphasis on involving beneficiaries and users will ensure that BIG can bring lasting change for people and communities across the UK."
Diana Whitworth is a consultant working for the Young Foundation on a new service for older people with mental health problems. She is a member of the Council of the Advertising Standards Authority, a member of the NHS Service Delivery and Organisation Commissioning Board, and a trustee of Cranstoun drug services. She was Chair of the External Reference Group for the National Service Framework for Long Term Conditions, which advised the government on standards of care for people with neurological conditions (2002-2005). She was co-director of Grandparents Plus (2004-2007), Chief Executive of Carers UK (1999-2003), Head of Public Affairs at the National Consumer Council (1988-1999) and Senior Research and Development Officer at Citizens Advice (1980-1999).
