BIG invests in local trust

Up to £200 million will be invested in 100-150 urban and rural neighbourhoods in England that may have had difficulty obtaining funding in the past.

Of the 50 neighbourhoods identified so far, six are in Yorkshire and the Humber. Each will receive at least £1 million through Big Local Trust.

The areas are:

  • Hull – Greatfields Estate
  • Wakefield – Warwick Estate, Knottingley
  • North Lincolnshire  - Winterton
  • Doncaster – Woodlands
  • Barnsley – Thurnscoe
  • Kirklees -  Dewsbury Moor

An independent charitable Trust will be set up to support local funding schemes in the targeted areas over 10 years. BIG is asking for expressions of interest from organisations interested in running the Trust by Thursday 12 August 2010.

If you’re not in one of the areas above, there are still plenty of opportunities to help your community. Check out the Communities page on BIG’s website which includes details about all our relevant funding programmes currently open, lessons learnt from projects and previous experience, and inspirational videos and podcasts from community based projects.

The spotlight is on young people

At any one time there are around 60,000 children in foster or residential care, around 3,000 young people in young offenders institutions and around 175,000 young carers, with many more “hidden carers”.

These vulnerable young people across England will receive support through Youth in Focus, a new programme launched on 20 July 2010.

Youth in Focus targets three groups of vulnerable young people: young carers, young people leaving care and young people leaving young offenders institutions.

Through an investment of £30 million, the programme will help make a difference to the lives of young people in the target groups and the services they receive.

Briefing events will be taking place throughout September for those interested in applying to the programme. For further details and to book on one of the events please see the Youth in Focus programme page.

Coming, ready or not

Who knew a love of the children’s game Hide and Seek would provide the link which would bring together children and elders from very different cultures.

Well that’s exactly what Verd de Gris Ltd found out when they brought together children from local primary schools and a group of Asian elders through their Awards for All funded project, Coming, ready or not.

Hear from the project themselves on the latest podcast from the Yorkshire and Humber team.

Lottery Shares Consultation

On 19 May 2010, Jeremy Hunt, the new Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, outlined his vision for the cultural sector and the National Lottery.

He proposed that Big Lottery Fund’s 50 per cent share of the total good cause allocation would be reduced to 46 per cent by April 2011 and down to 40 per cent by April 2012. The three other good causes: arts, sports and heritage, will benefit equally from the remaining share.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) recently launched a three month consultation on these proposals to change the way Lottery shares are distributed. This will run until 21 August 2010.
