The National Lottery Act (2006) gave Big Lottery Fund the powers to distribute non-Lottery, as well as Lottery funding.
The Fund's non-Lottery mission is to work collaboratively, putting our experience, systems and learning at the disposal of others for the benefit of communities and people most in need.
Our non-lottery funded programmes, distribute funding on behalf of other organisations, such as government.
The Fund's experience, infrastructure and expertise mean we are perfectly positioned to deliver wider community funding programmes. We deliver funding throughout the UK, with programmes tailored specifically to the needs of communities in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland as well as those that cover the whole UK..
Since June 2004 BIG has awarded over £6bn to projects supporting health, education, environment and charitable purposes. 80-90 per cent of our funding is awarded to voluntary and community sector organisations.
If you are interested in applying for funding from a non-Lottery programme please use the funding finder or call our advice line on 0845 410 20 30.
Dormant bank and building society accounts
The Dormant Bank and Building Societies Act 2008 set up the framework for a scheme under which money in dormant bank and building society accounts can be distributed for the benefit of the community, whilst ensuring that the right of owners to reclaim their money is protected. The Act specifies that the Big Lottery Fund is the nominated distributor of surplus monies (unclaimed monies) from the Reclaim Fund.
In England we were directed to pass all the funding to Big Society Trust, which has been established as an independent social investment wholesaler.
In Northern Ireland the Department of Finance and Personnel are leading on setting priorities for dormant accounts funding.
In Wales and Scotland we are directed to deliver the funding in accordance with directions issued by the devolved administrations. In Scotland funding is delivered through the Young Start programme. In Wales the funding is delivered through the Getting Ahead, Getting Ahead 2 and Sustainable Steps programmes.
As well as the ability to distribute non-Lottery funding, the Fund can also explore shared service opportunities or collaboration on joint funding schemes.
